A woman is in a serious condition at Waikato Hospital after she was hit by a truck at a service station in Taupo in the early hours of this morning.

Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said the Kenworth truck and trailer unit had been refueling at a Mobil service station on Tongariro St at 3.30am and was exiting the service station when the 26-year-old was struck.

It was believed the female pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol at the time, he said.It was unclear how the woman was hit and Taupo Police Serious Crash Unit are investigating the matter, including reviewing CCTV footage.

“This is an unfortunate incident where an intoxicated person has made a poor choice resulting in them being severely injured.

‘‘People need to remember that alcohol impairs your judgement, even as a pedestrian you need to be aware of your actions and the potential risks.”
