A magnitude 5.5 earthquake near Rotorua has been felt as a sharp jolt in Wellington this afternoon.
GeoNet reported the rumble at 2.39pm, centred 10km west of Ngongotaha, near Rotorua.
It was 220km deep, and was experienced throughout the North Island.
