A Taupo barber shop owner has been jailed for smashing a wine glass over the head of  bar patron in a heated argument.

Lisa Trena Boyd, 38 was sentenced in Rotorua District Court today to two years and three months imprisonment for wounding with intent to injure.

Boyd got into a heated argument with the victim after her partner attempted to break up an argument between the victim and his partner in Finn McCuhal's Bar on June 21, the court was told.

Boyd grabbed a wine glass and smashed the glass on the head of the victim causing  deep cut which required six stitches.

In sentencing Judge Phillip Cooper said Boyd had two previous similar convictions in 2003 and 2011.
