A Wellington mother charged with illtreating her child by breastfeeding while she was using methamphetamine is to ask for bail next week.

Paula Alida Smith, 37, of Strathmore Park, has been refused bail and remanded in custody since appearing in Wellington District Court in June on other charges of having methamphetamine for supply.  She is to ask the High Court for electronic bail.

She has not pleaded to the charges.

It is believed to be only the second time in New Zealand a woman has been prosecuted for using the drug while breastfeeding.
