Diesel spill delays Rimutaka Hill traffic
Road reopened after large diesel spill
The Rimutaka Hill Road has reopened after a diesel spill this morning, though the road remains slippery.
Cars were crawling up the hill at about 10kmh before the road was closed by police at 7am.
The road was re-opened about 8.40am.
The spill on the Featherston side of the hill had made the road ‘‘like a skating rink’’, a witness said.
It appeared the spill was on the uphill lane but had spread to the downhill lane.
The spill reached from the bottom to at least the summit on the Wairarapa side.
Both lanes opened again at 8.40am though NZTA urged drivers to be careful as the road was still slippery.
At least two cars crashed. There were no injuries.
