A Wellington mother charged with ill-treating her young daughter by breastfeeding while using methamphetamine has had the charge dropped.

Paula Alida Smith, 37, of Strathmore Park, appeared in the Wellington District Court this morning before Judge Oke Blaikie on a charge of ill-treatment of a child.

It would have have been one of the first such prosecutions in New Zealand but the charge was withdrawn.

Ms Smith has been remanded in custody and is to be be sentenced on five other charges relating to the possession and supply of methamphetamine next month.
