Emergency services were searching the Rimutaka Range last night after a car went over a steep bank.

Inspector Ken Climo of central police communications said emergency services were sweeping the area after a car was spotted off the side of the Rimutaka hill.

No-one was found in the vehicle or in the immediate area, but search crews and a rescue helicopter were checking the wider vicinity for passengers.

"Any crash on the Rimutakas we treat as serious because of the tricky location," Mr Climo said.

An ambulance was on standby while police and fire crews conducted the search.
