The young man fatally stabbed at a flat in Hastings was allegedly attacked by the woman he was dating.
Christopher Robin Jones, 22, suffered stab wounds to the stomach after an altercation early on Saturday and died in Hawke's Bay Hospital later that morning.
A 22-year-old woman will appear in Hastings District Court today, charged with assault. It is understood the woman was in a relationship with Mr Jones.
Neighbours said a group of young men with "souped-up cars" rented the King St property and treated it as a "party house".
They described the young woman, who had been staying at the house for the past month, as "really nice and friendly".
Mr Jones was a Hastings resident. He was not American as reported by some media.
Hawke's Bay Detective Sergeant Emmet Lynch said police were continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
Police were working their way through interviews with a large number of people who were at the King St house at the time of the incident.
Mr Lynch said police were making steady process with their inquiries and early autopsy results were being evaluated.
They would not comment as the matter is now before the courts.
The woman's family had no comment to make yesterday.
