Two people were flown to hospital by helicopter with moderate to serious injuries after a two cars collided on the Desert Rd.
The cars were travelling in the opposite directions on State Highway 1 when they crashed about 4pm yesterday.
A 15-year-old received serious injuries and was flown to Palmerston North Hospital by the Taupo Greenlea Rescue Helicopter. A baby from the same car escaped injury.
The male driver from the other vehicle was also flown to hospital for treatment for moderate injuries.
Pilot Todd Dunham said the car had rolled several times.
"It's amazing that the severity wasn't worse. It could have been a lot worse than what it turned out. They were very lucky."
