Thieves strolled into the Harcourts Building in central Wellington and helped themselves to a 30-kilogram umbrella from a statue.
Building owner Mark Dunajtschik said a Grey St shopkeeper told him he saw two men carrying the heavy bronze umbrella to a car after removing it from the building's Australasian Temperance Society foyer about noon on Monday.
The statue is part of Wellington's Secret Art Walk, which is a Property Council initiative.
Mr Dunajtschik said it was regrettable that some people seemed to think the statue would be more valuable as melted-down scrap metal.
