Three bits of bling to rule them all
Custom pieces for The Hobbit premiereOLIVIA WANNAN
A sparkle or two of The Hobbit premiere glitz will be on show next week before gracing the red carpet.
Handcraft jeweller Odette Anscombe-Smith has created three custom pieces for her friend Carolynne Cunningham, who is a producer and assistant director on The Hobbit.
Cunningham will choose one, and the others could well be worn by stars of the movie.
"I don't know which one she will wear - but she might farm [the others] out to Cate Blanchett or Miranda Kerr, I don't know," Anscombe-Smith said.
The $15,000 moonstone and pink quartz necklace, $7000 green elven-style earrings and $5000 crystal skull pendant took days to create and were all inspired by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
"I wanted to make something that had unknown origins - something that could have been made by elves, could have been made by dwarves . . . something a dragon would covet," she said.
Some of this inspiration might have been drawn from her time as a featured extra in the Hobbit films - as a dwarf woman, complete with beard.
Through her friendship with Cunningham, she has also managed to score herself a rare invitation to the exclusive premiere in Wellington on November 28.
Her jewels will also tour the premieres in London and New York, before returning to New Zealand, perhaps to be sold.
"They're not your usual everyday wear," Anscombe-Smith said. "Who knows where they'll end up."
The jewellery pieces will be on show from November 23 to 27 at art store Real Aotearoa, in Grey St, Wellington.
