The New Caledonia-based Vendemiaire arrived in Wellington at 9am and will stay until Monday before travelling to Auckland. It is a regular visitor to New Zealand waters and Wellington.
A French Embassy spokeswoman said the trip was for diplomatic reasons.
Commanding Officer Joffrey Guerry was this morning meeting with Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.
Crew from the ship would have a game of indoor soccer against the New Zealand Navy at Wellington Indoor Sports at 3.30pm today.
Commander Guerry has been described as a keen fan of rugby and The Hobbit.
