Paramedics have been unable to transport a seriously injured man because he became aggressive after the car he was in crashed into a wall and flung him through the windscreen.
Just before 7pm the car, with two men inside, hit the free-standing wall on Fraser St, Wainuiomata.
Police were also at the scene and acting shift commander Sergeant Mark Oliver said the man may have become aggressive because of the head injury.
The other man also sustained moderate injuries in the crash.
Sgt Oliver said it was not yet clear if alcohol had been a factor.
