An Otaki man is facing driving and drug charges after his son dared him to do wheelies.

The 41-year-old man was pulled over by police for speeding and sustained loss of traction outside the Aotaki Street skate park on Thursday afternoon, Otaki police constable Mike Howland said.

He was found to have two children in the car, and when the car was impounded for 28 days for the sustained loss of traction, police found a ''substantial quantity of cannabis''.

In explanation for his behaviour, the driver said his son had dared him to do the 'wheelies'.

''This is a timely reminder for drivers behind the wheel to stick to the road rules and remember who the adult is in situations like these,'' Mr Howland said.

The man was arrested and will appear in the Levin District Court on Thursday, facing driving and cannabis-related charges.
