After a week of strong wind and rain, the weekend ahead looks largely fine for Wellington.

MetService forecaster Philippa Murdoch said the sunny morning Wellington woke to today would be replaced by patchy rain and northerly winds rising to 70kmh in the afternoon.

However, the temperature would stay warm, reaching up to 20degC this afternoon.

Tomorrow morning a few remaining showers would clear and most of the day should be fine before a southerly change and a few showers in the evening.

Saturday would start out with a few showers but they would clear for a largely fine afternoon.

However, a southerly flow would keep the maximum temperature at 15C.

Sunday, when the high was expected to reach 18C, would be mostly fine, though a bit of cloud would appear later in the day.

Wellington was hit by heavy rain and wind yesterday, with gusts up to 120kmh which blew windows out and brought down powerlines.
