Police responding to reports of a pursuit in Upper Hutt this afternoon found themselves chasing another driver with a weapon and drugs in his car.

Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood said the second pursuit began after police tried to stop a car driving suspiciously in Belmont about 3.20pm.

After a short chase the car pulled over and two men inside tried to run, but were arrested.

Inside the car police found $900 cash, 10 small bags containing suspected methamphetamine, scales and an extendible baton.

The two men would likely face charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug utensils and possession of an offensive weapon.

Dealing charges would also be considered, Mr Harwood said.

The initial pursuit in Trentham was abandoned and the car had not been found, he said.
