A woman has been accused of immersing her toddler's hands in boiling water.

The 31-year-old from Cannons Creek appeared in the Porirua District Court yesterday. Charges include ill-treatment of a child and failing to seek medical attention. Lawyer Greg Gimblett said she would defend the charges.

Police believe the boy, 2, had suffered injuries in boiling water eight months before they came across him in August.

The boy is in Child, Youth and Family care, along with his 3-month-old sibling. He faces extensive surgery to repair the damage to his hands.

The woman was remanded on bail until later this month.
