A man was slung off the side of Mt Ngauruhoe by a helicopter using a 33 metre line after falling and injuring himself this afternoon.
The 23-year-old had been walking on the mountain with a group when he fell at about 2.30pm, injuring his back and receiving significant grazing to much of his body, Taupo Greenlea Rescue Helicopter pilot Nat Every said.
The man had to be recovered using a long line because the steep terrain made landing beside him or hovering above impossible, he said.
Alpine rescue staff were dropped in to assess the man and help get him onto a stretcher which was attached to a 33m long line.
He was then flown off the mountain onto flat land for treatment.
Every said he was conscious and responsive during the recovery.
The man was flown to Rotorua Hospital.
