A fire-fighter jumped into Wellington Harbour to save a drunk woman who had gone for an ill-advised midnight dip off the end of Petone Wharf last night.

Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Barnett, from Lower Hutt, said the 20-year-old woman jumped off the end of the wharf about midnight.

Emergency services were called by a member of the public who saw her go in.

The woman had been unable to get out herself out so a fire-fighter jumped in the water to rescue her.

She was taken to Hutt Hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

It was unclear who the woman had been drinking with.
