Wairarapa's three district councils will join a Wellington-wide working party to discuss possible future governance structures.
Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa councils are the latest to join the group, set up by Greater Wellington and Porirua City Council to negotiate a joint amalgamation proposal to be presented to the Local Government Commission early next year.
In a joint statement mayors Garry Daniell, Ron Mark and Adrienne Staples said the approach was consistent with work they had already done "over the past 12 months". Last month the three councils adopted a single Wairarapa unitary council as their preferred option for community consultation, which is now under way. "We are currently asking our communities what they think of the options for Wairarapa and it is equally important that we are discussing this with Wellington councils," the statement said.
