Firefighters were met with chaotic scenes after three cars collided near Levin, killing a woman and injuring six other people.
Emergency services were called to the fatal crash near the intersection of Waihou Rd and State Highway 57 about 5.10pm yesterday.
Levin deputy chief fire officer Carl Beissel said it appeared to be a head-on crash involving two north-bound cars and another travelling south.
"It was quite a lot of chaos when we arrived. There were bits of car strewn all over the road," Mr Beissel said.
"The cars were severely damaged."
Two women were trapped in one of the northbound cars and had to be cut out. The driver of the car - an elderly woman - was critically injured and flown to Palmerston North Hospital. Her passenger died.
The southbound car rolled in the crash. Children were the among the six people injured.
