A 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit Wellington early this morning.
GeoNet duty seismologist Ken Gledhill said the quake, at 2.39am, was reported felt in Wairarapa, the top of the South Island, the Kapiti Coast, and Wellington.
It was centred 20 km southeast of Wellington at a depth of 28km - about where the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates meet.
