A milk tanker rolled leaving the driver trapped and injured in Marton early this morning.
Heavy lifting cranes were due to remove the vehicle after it blocked the road on the junction of State Highway 3 and Union Line about 3am, a police spokesman said.
Diversions were in place around the scene in the Rangitikei district, he said.
A man in his 30s had to be extracted and was taken by road to Wanganui Base Hospital in a critical condition, an ambulance spokeswoman said.
