Five people have been injured in a two-car smash north of Auckland this afternoon.

Three people are in a moderate condition, two people are in a serious condition, including one who is trapped, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is on the scene on State Highway one at Wellsford.

Three ambulances and a doctor are tending to the patients after being alerted to the incident at 4.30pm but at this stage, St John could not confirm the sex or age of those involved.

Motorists are advised that lengthy delays are expected given that the road is blocked and the increase in holiday traffic. Police and Transit staff are working to put diversions in place.
