Drilling at Bats Theatre has been halted after it was discovered the site used to be a whaling preparation site.

Earthquake strengthening and expansion work began on the Kent Tce building a few weeks ago, with the Wellington theatre temporarily moving to the former premises of the Big Kumara, on the corner of Cuba Mall and Dixon St.

Business development manager Chris O'Neill said drilling had stopped yesterday, while workers waited for test results looking at possible soil contamination. It was also possible there were tools buried below.

"City council have identified that the site was once used for whaling purposes back in the day. There were historical records of some kind."

Test results were due back in a matter of days.

Meanwhile, the temporary theatre was almost ready for use until the Kent Tce building was due for reopening in 2014.

What effect will a potential ban on booze at Rugby Sevens 2015 have on you?

I'd no longer go ... what's the point?

I'd buy a ticket, with rugby the priority again.

Ban or no ban, I'm still going.

I'd rather watch 'Wheel of Fortune' on a 24/7 loop than 7s.
