Army training sparks Waiouru blaze
A fire that started two days ago on Defence Force land in Waiouru began after army live fire training and may have burnt an area of 350 hectares.
Lieutenant Colonel Dave Harvey said the fire was in an area called Three Kings that was "very isolated" and "very rugged, way up in the back block".
Harvey said the fire may have burnt an area of 350 hectares in the past two days, but it was now contained in a five-hectare area.
Because of the isolation, army called for a helicopter to assist and had people dousing the fire with blankets.
The fire, which Harvey described as "small" in relation to the training area, had been contained, he said.
Harvey said if wind increased, the fire could become a concern.
