The father of a woman accused of killing her newborn baby is now accused of her rape.

The man, 58, who is on bail, will face four charges of sexual violation when he appears in Lower Hutt District Court next week, police have confirmed. The charges were laid earlier this month.

In December the man pleaded guilty to a charge of committing incest with his daughter. The offending is alleged to have occurred in June, court documents show.

The daughter, 22, is accused of murdering her newborn baby on September 8.

The dead infant, thought to be less than a day old, was found at the back of a property in Taita on September 10, wrapped in a towel.

The woman, also on bail, was charged on September 18, five days after her father was charged with incest. Both are Samoan.

Police have received DNA results confirming the identity of the baby's father, but will not reveal them.

The man's name and any details that might identify the woman are suppressed.
