A drift triker was flown to hospital after he lost control in a residential area and crashed, breaking his leg.

The 22-year-old man was riding with a group of friends in a new subdivision in Kinloch, Taupo when the incident unfolded about 8pm last night, Greenlea Rescue Helicopter spokesman Nat Every said.

The man is now in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital.

The man's trike smashed into a bollard on the side of the road. He was flown to Rotorua Hospital with a suspected fractured femur, Mr Every said.

Drift triking is a sport developed in New Zealand in which riders take to specially constructed tricycles with slick rear wheels, allowing them to achieve skids and tricks.
