Police have released a photo of a man missing in Taupo in the hope in will jog someone's memory.
Concerns are growing for the safety of Leighton Kerry Grant, 35, who left Taupo on Friday night but failed to arrive back as planned at 6pm on Saturday.
He was driving his late model white Suzuki Vitara, registration FTN631 which was found yesterday morning at Hallets Bay, just south of Hatepe.
Police now have a genuine concern for his whereabouts given his "state of mind".
While Taupo area commander Inspector Steve Bullock said it was inappropriate for him to discuss Mr Grant's mental health in any detail, he did say there were concerns about how he'd react if approached directly.
"To err on the side of caution we are appealing for any members of the public who see him to report the sightings to Police rather than trying to engage with him directly."
Police are searching for Mr Grant on land and air, as well as in Lake Taupo.
Anyone with any information on Mr Grant's whereabouts, or who may have seen him in or around Hallets Bay, is asked to call Taupo Police on 07 378 6060 as soon as possible.
