Friends of former Wellington burlesque dancer Eva Wolfe are rallying together to hold a variety burlesque show to help pay for her medical bills.

The 31-year-old, known by her stage name Eva Strangelove, is fighting Streptococcus pneumoniae in a hospital in Austin, Texas.

The disease, which causes serious infection and can be fatal, has kept Wolfe in intensive care for more than two weeks and without medical insurance her bills are racking up quickly.

A dancing friend, Courtney L'amour, is organising a variety show to help Wolfe pay, but was without a venue until today.

Ms L'amour said she has had several offers from strangers, one of whom is Calendar Girls Wellington manager Mal Walters.

Friends and family of Wolfe are trying to raise $20,000 to assist with medical expenses.

Mr Walters said he wanted to do something to help because he knew a few of the local burlesque dancers that performed at his venue.

''I know the girls wanted to help and so did I, and this seemed like a good way to do our bit,'' he said.

Ms L'amour has previously performed at Calendar Girls and said she was overwhelmed by the response from people.

''I've got quite a few dancers together to perform and now I've got venue contacts I can sit down and work out the date and time and get things under way,'' she said.

Wolfe had sent a Facebook message to fans from her hospital bed saying she was still unable to speak but was now able to consume pureed solids through a food drip.
