Banker's office may become burger shop
The Hastings building that once housed merchant banker Sam Kelt may soon become a drive-through Carl's Jr burger joint.
Restaurant Brands has lodged a resource consent application with the Hastings District Council to build a Carl's Jr on the corner of Heretaunga and Hastings streets.
A building on the property housed Kelt Capital until it was evicted in October after failing to pay rent to another of Mr Kelt's companies, Manhatten Services, which was itself put into receivership.
Restaurant Brands is in negotiations with receivers to buy the property for an undisclosed sum. It wants to demolish and remove the current buildings and build a single-storey 80-seat restaurant, with parking and a drive-through. It also wants to put up an eight-metre-high sign at the southern corner of the site.
The council is considering the request, which it received last month.
Restaurant Brands, which runs KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks outlets, bought the rights to operate the Carl's Jr chain in New Zealand in 2011.
New Zealand has seven Carl's Jr restaurants, a brand founded in California over 70 years ago.
