Former Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge manager Rob McKnight has been charged with fraud after a 14-month police investigation into his involvement with the event.

McKnight was sacked as event and sponsorship manager in September 2011 after he allegedly used a $1600 spot travel prize intended for a competitor.

An independent investigation commissioned by Lake Taupo Challenge Trust later found McKnight's dismissal to be justified.

He was employed by the trust, which oversees the event on behalf of the Taupo Moana Rotary Club.

Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Perks said this week that police had completed their investigation after a complaint about McKnight was made by the trust last year.

McKnight had been charged with one count of using a document for pecuniary advantage, Mr Perks said.

He is due to appear in the Taupo District Court next month.
