A car fire forced a temporary closure of the southbound lane through the Terrace Tunnel about 1pm today.
David Bradley of Feilding, said a car following him spotted smoke and flames coming from under his Subaru SXV and got him to stop just before he entered the tunnel.
The fire extinguished itself before the fire brigade got to the scene. A fire engine escorted the car through the tunnel to clear the road.
Mr Bradley said a rubber seal on his recently-repaired differential caught fire and he thought it might have overheated for lack of oil.
The blockage was now cleared.
