A fisherman has serious injuries after falling into the sea near Castlepoint this afternoon.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was called to Castlepoint in Wairarapa about midday after a fisherman fell 2-3 metres off rocks into the sea, sustaining multiple injuries.

The man, in his late 50s, was picked up out of the water by a local fishing boat after being in the water for about half an hour.

Life Flight crewman Colin Larsen said the day was calm, but the currents made the area like a "washing machine".

"It was a lovely day, but the natural movement of the waves make for pretty strong currents. He was getting washed about quite a bit."

The man was treated on shore by a helicopter paramedic before being flown to Wellington Hospital.

He is being assessed for serious injuries.

What do you think of the white peace poppy campaign?

I'm all for the white poppies.

I like the idea, but the timing's wrong.

It's contemptible and insulting.

I don't care.
