She might not have had much luck with the horses, but Phillipa Benjamin should have known to back herself in the fashion stakes.

Miss Benjamin won the Fashion in the Field competition at the Trentham Races' Ladies Day, after entering under pressure from her friends.

Miss Benjamin said the win was ''unexpected'' - but she hadn't even intended to enter the competition.

''A couple of my friends were there with me and pushed me up and entered me in.

''One of them put her hat on my head and said 'Away you go'.''She won a gift pack from Life Pharmacy and a getaway for eight people in Martinborough. 'We've already sussed out who's going.''

The Hibiscus Coast resident, down in Wellington for the weekend, was at the races with two friends for ''a girls' day''.

''I didn't win anything on the horses, but it was nice to have an excuse to dress up.''
