Two crashes on the highways into Wellington had Hutt Valley commuters feeling a depressing sense of deja-vu on Tuesday morning.

A nose-to-tail crash happened south of Petone shortly after 6am at almost the exact spot a truck-and-trailer broke down on Monday morning leading to a traffic back-up of 30km.

A commuter said traffic was backed up and, when she drove past the two-car, nose-to-tail crash in the southbound right lane, two cars had stopped.

NZTA warned drivers to expect delays.

Then, shortly after 7am on Tuesday, NZTA warned of another crash in the southbound lane of State Highway 1, just south of the Ngauranga interchange.

It was near the same spot a breakdown on Monday added to the morning's commute, which saw motorists stuck in traffic for hours.

Neither crash caused serious delays.

Meanwhile in Auckland a truck fire had caused delays on the airport motorway, SH20A.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said a small truck caught alight on the motorway - George Bolt Memorial Drive - airport-bound, on Monday morning before 8am.

Diversions were in place around the incident and motorists were urged to consider using Puhinui Rd instead.
