Police say they are still investigating how a man was killed on a rural East Coast road over the weekend.

Nelson Hari, 25, was found dead on Tapuaeroa Rd, near Ruatoria, north of Gisborne, early on Sunday morning.

Police said on Sunday Hari was the victim of a hit-and-run, but later corrected the statement, saying they were still investigating whether he was hit by a vehicle.

On Tuesday, Detective Sergeant Kevin Ford, of Gisborne, said police had seized and forensically examined a vehicle belonging to a "person of interest".

While police believed a vehicle was involved in Hari's death, no arrests had been made.

An autopsy was being carried out on Hari's body on Tuesday as police continued to work on establishing how he died, Ford said.
