Police investigating the weekend death of a pedestrian on a rural East Coast road have called for sightings of a damaged vehicle in the area.

The mystery vehicle is the second linked to the death of Nelson Hari, 25, who was found dead on Tapuaeroa Rd, near Ruatoria, north of Gisborne, early on Sunday morning.

Police said on Sunday Hari was the victim of a hit-and-run, but later corrected the statement, saying they were still investigating whether he was hit by a vehicle.

They later said they had seized and forensically examined a vehicle belonging to a "person of interest" but no arrests had been made.

On Thursday police said they wanted the public's help to find a second vehicle, with frontal damage, that would have been in the area around midnight when Hari was fatally injured.

An autopsy has been carried out on Hari's body but police said they would not release details of its findings.
