Seven fire engines rushed to a house fire in Wellington's Mt Cook.
The closeness of the houses on Tasman St meant it was important to prevent the Saturday evening fire spreading, so multiple engines were called out.
Neighbour Sophia Wallingford said she saw smoke drifting down the street, went outside and saw the house across the street ablaze.
Flames had been coming out of the skylight. She said the occupants were students. Neighbouring houses have been evacuated.
"It smells pretty bad" she said. " but I don't think there was anyone inside, I saw the guy on his phone calling the fire service."
There had been no reports of anyone hurt.
