A driver has crashed through a fence and down a bank on a notorious bend north of Wellington.

The female driver escaped with just minor injuries in the accident on Hayward's Hill Rd between Pauatahanui and Hutt Valley at about 2pm, Senior Station Officer Gareth Hughes said.

Emergency services were "quite often" called to the site which was on a narrow, windy stretch of the road.

A fence the woman crashed through had only just been replaced after a previous crash, he said.

It appears the woman had been driving towards Hutt Valley when she left the road, crashed through the fence, before coming to a rest about 15 metres down a grass bank.
