The forecast for New Year's Eve in New Zealand is fine, if a bit windy in spots.

MetService forecaster John Law said, except for some showers possible in the south and west of the South Island, the long range forecast was looking largely good for New Zealand.

WeatherWatch today released its New Year's Eve forecast, saying high pressure will cover much of the North Island and some of the South Island next Tuesday evening.

Wellington, Hawke's Bay, and Wairarapa would become windier, especially in Wellington, with north to north west winds. The skies would be mostly clear with a midnight temperature of about 16degC.

Taranaki, Taupo, Whanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Kapiti would have cloudy periods and west to northwest winds increasing. There was a risk of a shower but it would be mainly dry with  midnight temperature of 15-16C.

Nelson, Marlborough, and Canterbury would be mostly clear with some high cloud possible further south. There could be some breezy north to northwest winds inland with midnight temperature of 13-15C.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and King Country had a 10 percent chance of isolated showers with mostly light winds. A midnight temperature of 14-16C was expected.

Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, East Cape, and Gisborne would be mostly clear with light winds and a midnight temperature of about 16C.

The West Coast of the South Island had a 40 percent chance of showers, however this could change as we neared New Year's Eve. The midnight temperature would be 14-15C.

Southland and Otago would be fairly cloudy but mostly dry with north to northwest winds and a 25 percent chance of some spitting rain. The midnight temperature there would be 11-12C.
