A measles outbreak in the upper North Island is spreading, with 10 confirmed cases so far linked to a Sydney dance festival.

One case in Auckland and nine in Taupo and Turangi have been confirmed.

Measles is highly infectious, and public health authorities are working to contact people who may have been exposed.

Three of the Taupo cases and the Auckland case had attended the 2013 World Supremacy Battleground hip-hop competition in Sydney in December.

Acting Deputy Director Public Health at the Ministry of Health Dr Harriette Carr said the remaining cases were family or known to those who had been at the festival.

Nobody has been hospitalised, but infected people are being kept isolated at home.

Other attendees at the festival came from Huntly and Hamilton and authorities there are tracing them, Dr Carr said.
