Almost $9000 in fines were handed out for breaking new alcohol laws in Wellington on New Year's Eve.

On Tuesday night, 35 fines of $250 each were handed out in the Wellington region for breaking new alcohol legislation.

The fines can be handed out for drinking or having an open drink in a liquor ban area or for using fake ID or someone else's ID.

A police spokesman said, on top of the 35  spot fines, 90 verbal warnings were issued in the Wellington region on New Year's Eve.

There were 20 arrests in Wellington City for alcohol-related matters such as disorder, fighting, and assaults.

The new legislation had a  ''positive impact'' on Wellington, he said.
