The helicopter search for a kayaker who was not wearing a lifejacket when he capsized while paddling near Gisborne has been called off for the evening.

The air search has been wound down as darkness sets in but the land-based search operation for the young man who disappeared in coastal waters just north of Gisborne  will continue this evening, police said.

The air search will resume in the morning, an Eastern District Communications spokesman said.

A pair of kayakers, a male and female both aged in their twenties, got into trouble on the water this afternoon off Turihaua Point, just north of Gisborne, police said.

The young woman was spotted in the water by boaties who rescued her shortly after 4pm today, however her companion has not yet been found.

The missing man had not been wearing a lifejacket when he was separated from his kayak, but rescuers remained "optimistic" they would be able to find him, a central district police spokesman said.
