A Wellington man has died after getting into trouble free diving off Opua Bay, just south of Makara.

Diving buddies worked desperately to save his life after he was dragged from the water this morning, but he died early this afternoon in the emergency department of Wellington Hospital.

The man, who was in his 30s was hauled up onto the beach and fellow divers worked on resuscitating him while they waited for emergency assistance.

Wellington Free Ambulance had to use a four wheel drive vehicle to get to the scene after the call about 11.30am.

The man was airlifted to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac Rescue helicopter in a critical condition.

Helicopter crewman Logan Taylor said the man was in a group of about five or six who were free diving with snorkels off the beach.

He was not sure how the diver got into difficulties.

‘‘They pulled him ashore and they gave him CPR till we arrived.’’

The on board paramedic continued CPR as he was flown to hospital, said Mr Logan.
