Smoke could be seen for kilometres after a huge fire at a school in Petone, north of Wellington.
The blaze, at the derelict Hutt Valley Memorial Tech College, broke out about 7.40pm.
Fire communications shift manager Jan Wills said 15 fire engines were called to the scene.
The single building was well involved when firefighters arrived, with flames through the roof.
Last year aged-care company Ryman purchased the site for future development.
