The Rimutaka Hill Road will be closed to motorists for a night while roadworks are underway.
The road will be closed between 8pm and 5.30am on Wednesday 29 January for works on State Highway 2, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.
It will reopen every 20 to 30 minutes to allow traffic through.
Road-works will also be carried out between 9.30am and 4.30pm every day until 12 February which will reduce Rimutaka Hill traffic to one lane as part of a drainage maintenance programme. That could bring delays of about 10 minutes, the NZTA said.
NZTA Regional performance Manager Mark Owen said closure was to allow work on the hill road's drainage at Muldoon's Corner. The NZTA planned to build new culverts to help drain water away from the hill, which would help prevent erosion and reduce maintenance costs for the road, he said.
