Both drivers involved in a two-car crash near Taupo this morning are in a serious condition.
Emergency services responded to the scene on State Highway 1 at Motutere at 7.30am.
Police say the collision blocked the highway and police ask motorists to avoid the area.
The Fire Service extracted both drivers from the wreckage and two rescue helicopters were called to transport the injured to hospital.
Fire Service communications Shift Manager Jaron Phillips said one person was in a serious condition and other suffered moderate injuries.
