A professional working in the education sector at a North Island institute has been fired after he was arrested for indecent assault.

Management were alerted to the incident in November last year and the man, whose name, profession and place of work are all suppressed, was immediately stood down.

Police and a disciplinary body were told the next day.

The man faces two charges of indecent assault and has signed an agreement not to work in his profession while the disciplinary body awaits the court decision and carries out its own investigation.

The head of the institute said the "inappropriate behaviour" was reported to him and he immediately contacted management, who terminated the man's contract last month after carrying out investigations of their own.

"When they were satisfied they knew what took place, they made the decision to dismiss him."

Any detail about the circumstances of the incident would prejudice the court case, he said. "I can't say anything that will draw attention to those involved."

He said meetings were held with those involved at the time and support was offered.

The head of the institute said there were "exaggerated and misguided rumours out there".

It was an "unfortunate incident" that he hoped would be put behind it.

The accused said he was unable to comment on the charges, and anything that was said would only prejudice his case.
