Thick fog rolled back over Wellington Harbour and the airport yesterday evening, raising passengers' fears of a second night of travel chaos.

About six incoming flights and six outgoing ones had to be cancelled after the fog descended about 4.30pm. A similar number of flights were also delayed. But by 7pm the blanket had lifted, and the airport was hopeful its weather problems of the past two days were over.

MetService forecaster David Miller said the moist air causing the fog had dried up. There was likely to be low cloud this morning but it would not be foggy. The cloud would be accompanied by northerlies.

Wellington Airport spokeswoman Briarley Kirk said a backlog of passengers remained last night. "There will be delays getting these people through the airport."

The travel plans of more than 5000 people were affected yesterday.

What do you think of the white peace poppy campaign?

I'm all for the white poppies.

I like the idea, but the timing's wrong.

It's contemptible and insulting.

I don't care.
